If you would like to travel back to Interlaken's past, visit Unterseen. The small town can be reached from Interlaken centre in a few minutes by foot, where you can see the impressive medieval buildings around the market place. The church tower from the 13th century, for example, even survived a fire. In the middle of the square stands the town hall, the first hotel in the Bernese Oberland and now a restaurant. It was built in 1470, accommodating animal drivers on the way to Italy. Now back to Interlaken, where two monuments to the past await: the former monastery and the castle where the Bernese bailiff once lived.
Tour: from the centre of Interlaken, via the Aare watergate to Unterseen, from there via Marktgasse to Höheweg and the Höhematte, where the castle and monastery are located.
